I've been looking for a good ecommerce plugin for WordPress

The WP ecommerce plugin: I've tried several times in the past and have always had trouble

I've no idea if it's working OK with current version

Support on their forums is pretty bad   :(

I wanted to know how the ecommerce was done on markettheme.com?

Is it own developed code?

Is it possible to test out the admin before buying?

AND: how easy is it to customise?

Yes, Market theme is fully self-contained and is made up of its own developed code.

You can test out everything at our demo site.

To use the admin backend, just follow the instructions in the RED header area at the top.

(The demo is using an older version of WordPress, but the theme itself has no problem on the latest version of WordPress.)

Customizing is pretty easy if you know some coding.  In addition, it also has a theme settings area in the admin section where you can customize colors, thumbnail attributes, sizing and other stuff WITHOUT having to know any code.
