Possible to Integrate with Other Themes?

I undertsand that Market is it's own theme, but I thought I'd ask anyway…

I am an avid user of Justin Tadlock's Hybrid theme framework, which allows for child themes to be created and used. I would love to hear your thoughts on if it would be possible to create a child theme of Market to be used with the hybrid framework.

I just found out about child themes recently.  Someone tried it and was having problems with it working 100%.

Right now, Market version 3.4 is its own theme and although someone who knew what they were doing could integrate it into an existing theme, it's not a simple task.

With that said, our future plan is to move toward that type of setup where integrating the theme functionality with existing themes, would be as simple as adding a Market related folder to your theme, and then inserting a couple of lines of code within your existing theme to "include" certain files.

That's probably 5 -6 months away though, but it's coming.

That would be an awesome feature!  Thanks for sharing a little bit of the roadmap.

Glad to share.

Things are moving right along.  I've got another release that's being prepared right now.  It's not quite the "future" version mentioned above yet, but it's getting there.  We've got our changes mapped out to this "future" version, and are currently getting all of our ducks in a row.

We're also very close to having Market contain a "theme options" page that you'll see in your admin browser.  It'll be a menu system that will allow you to set things up and make common changes without editing code.  This will make it super easy to install, and also eventually have easy access to changing the currency shown on the site, your Paypal ID, and other things.

I'll keep you posted as things develop.

Damn this forum.

I posted something, filled in the math, and it said "form not filled by human hands" and thats it! No back, no retry, no saved text. Talk about crap user interface. .

.and it did it again, this time said the math was incorrect, and again, no chance to save, re-enter, etc. Lets see if I need to copy/paste this back in again..

What I was asking was how far along is the ability for some integration? … it's almost June now, several months into the 5-6 month period quoted earlier :)

Haven't heard any other reports of problems posting on the forum.  Not sure why you had problems creating a post.

As far as integrating Market into other themes, it IS coming along.  (Those long term time quotes are tough to do, and I'm an eternal optimist anyway. )

Anyway, we are making progress and have been structuring all of our upgrades to move progressively closer and closer to our goal of easier integration.

There are a few improvements and features that jumped ahead in line of the easier integration goal, but every day is closer.

I hesitate on giving a date of when the easy integration may come — but we've decided to make it coincide with a complete theme redesign (Market 4) that'll give a person the option of leaving the "blog" layout altogether, and going fully with a typical e-commerce layout.  (Although a blog layout will still be available)

Looking at the "to-do" list right now knowing how time flies along, and trying to fight my optimism… that's probably another 3-4 months out.

I wish I had a smaller number for you, but I figure it won't do you any good to give you a poor estimate.  If it's done before then, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

For now, it's actually on pause.  Right now, Market is heading down a path of being more closely resembling of an online store rather than a blog format.   The idea isn't dead, but it is on pause.

What we've been recommending, is to create a sub-folder on your server (named "store" or something), and then install a new version of Wordpress into that folder.  Then, make that install a version of Market Theme and setup the colors and logo so that it matches your existing site.

Then, you'll simply need to put a link in your main blog's navigation area that links to the Market theme store folder.

That should be pretty straight forward easy, and should get you up and going right away.

Quite a few members are doing that already.
