User Purchase History & Demo

I'm still debating over this – and I think right now if the user purchase history matched that of wp-eCommerce, I'd be there in a nanosecond. I don't like PayPal's brain dead reporting. You either get too much, or to little, and you have to work with the data. You can't just have a nice report. I have to say that the quick summary and ability to look at orders right there in the plugin admin is really nice.

According to the product matrix thats the only thing they have over you.

I wish there were a downloadable demo. Online doesn't help me, I want to see it with my products, in my theme, etc. Ah well..

Tony the market theme won't work "in" your theme like WP ecommerce. That'a a plugin, this is a complete theme.

If what's important for you is the reporting then buy the add ons for the ecommerce plugin and customize the look and feel of your theme.

However, as far as I understand from other users, the support offered for the plugin is minimal. I haven't used my market theme licence yet and I have a test site setup. If you'd like to fiddle with it then drop me your email here and I'll arrange it for you

I'm conTemplate-ing buying the thing anyway..

What would make a decision a bit easier would be to know that if I were to buy the single user license, can I upgrade it to the developer one?

Hi Tony,

Yes, you can upgrade to a developer license later if you desire.  All you would pay is the difference between the two.

Here's a link to the page with the upgrade link:

(In case you were wondering, we just keep track of date the developer license or upgrade was purchased.)

Any further thought on user purchase history? I suppose "reinventing the wheel" is probably going to be standard reply, but .. it's the only thing that WPeCommerce has on MarketTheme. The only thing.

..and at this point, honestly, it was a big reason why I picked that thing. It has such a nice back end. It's just.. it's .. well, we know the rest. the docs, the .. reliability, and predictability ..

But if there were record keeping aside from PayPal – this would it. MarketTheme seems to get rave reviews…

Hey Tony,

Awesome post…  (love the middle section)

Well, you pretty much cover all the bases.

A backend WOULD be a great addition for Market.  I've been trying to figure out the best way of going about something like that.  Because Market is a theme — I'm not exactly sure how that would work.  I've got some ideas, but nothing concrete with that yet.  Whatever it is, it'll have to incorporate database functionality to handle customer information.

It's possible that the solution might be to have an accompaning plugin of some sort that goes along with the theme.

I'll bring it up with our developers, and see if we can brainstorm a structure.

While we're on the subject, what sorts of data would you like to see?

Well, the only thing I have to base it on, against, etc ..

The admin functions that WPeC has – Which coincidentally is basically just a plug in.

So, in effect, you'd have to be doing a plugin that if done by the book, could work with any theme because it would be doing the WP API stuff. OTOH.. since MarketTheme is well integrated with both the API and it's own functions, at least this is what I'm figuring since I have not seen any code, but based on the description of the product.

WPeC keeps the order details, sends out the status, confirmation, shipping notice, and order closure – as you change the status from within the admin side of things. WPeC just shows up in the pages in admin, incase you have never looked at it ;-)

Ok thanks…

I was just curious to hear about the parts that you would MOST desire first.

WPeC has been around for awhile, so we wouldn't come out of the gates right away with everything it has.  Since this would be a new feature set direction for Market, we'd be starting with the basics, and work our way up from there releasing updates along the way.

Any further progress towards integration into another theme- or user purchase history?

Integration, because any changes we make are lost when you put out an update. Well, not lost, but who likes doing it over again each time, and user purchase history, because PayPal's interface is ridiculous.

Integration into another theme is something that we are working toward, however before we concentrate on that portion there are a list of additional features that we're wanting to add.

I understand that repeating things over and over is a pain.  If it helps, read our "version.txt" file, and it will tell you exactly what files have been changed.  If you've modified a file that's not listed in that file, then your change should remain intact.  In addition, I highly recommend using a program such as "WinMerge".  You can compare files side by side and easily see the differences.  An extremely valuable tool.

As far as the user history goes, it's closer on our "wish list", but it will probably be awhile.

Sigh ..  oh well.

WinMerge – well, my web sites are not done with Windows. Though a similar utility is called zsCompare that was multi-platform.

Another project that has come to light is an integration of OsCommerce that uses the WordPress template system instead, and allows itself thus to be setup into an existing WordPress, or stand alone- using a better template system.  Might have to do some comparisons of Market to this, too.

Thank you for the "zsCompare" program name.  Is that for Mac, or Linux?

I pseronally have other sites that use osCommerce, so I'm pretty familiar with that.  I'm checking out the plugin for the Wordpress osCommerce plugin, and it says compatible for Wordpress up to version 2.6.2.  I wonder if that's accurate, or it it just hasn't been updated.

I might have to play with that a little.

Thanks for the info.
