Is this somthing you're theme supports?  I think this is a good route to take if one wants to customize since upgrades will always over-write changes.

This is something the Mystique theme does automatically for you when you make changes it creates the child theme.  Just a thought.

No, Market doesn't use the child theme route. It uses a similar approach for stylesheet changes (find more info in the "custom-styles" folder in the file "how-to-add-or-modify-styles.txt".

I highly recommend using a text comparison tool like "WinMerge" for comparing files. You can always see which files were changed by looking in the "version.txt" file.
