Mechanics of Upgrading

Being a non-technical kind of user, I've been able to use the Market Theme quite successfully and business is good.  But, I'd like to upgrade from 4.0 to 4. 2X and not have any down time.  Don't want to screw things up either!  How exactly do I upgrade?  Is it an overwrite with FTP?  And what does it mean when I look at my dashboard and it says I have the latest copy of my theme?

In reality, I just want to install an e-junkie shopping cart, so I can use Paypal Website Pro, and I understand the newer version of Market Theme makes it easier (by letting you just turn off the existing shopping cart).  And yes, I read the "readme" file with the download and it doesn't quite explain it on a level that I understand.

Sorry to ask what I think is probably a very simple question, but as I say, I'm a tennis teacher, not a programmer!

Thanks!

Ok, here's the best process.

First, let's keep your old theme files in case you ever need to revert back.

1.  Using your FTP program or your hosting control panel, rename your "mk4" theme folder to "mk4-old".

(located at:  wp-content/themes/mk4)

2.  Now, you can upload your new Market Theme version, either by regular FTP upload, or by using the Themes uploader tool found under your "Appearance > Themes" menu tab.

3. Finally, activate your new mk4 theme.

Your database should stay intact, so you aren't going to lose any data.

If you made any customization changes to your installation of Market Theme — those will be lost.  However if you keep around the old theme files that you had, you can use a text comparison tool like "WinMerge" to see what changes were made.

Upgrading this way is horrible and archaic.  There should be a way to auto update this theme WITHOUT losing the widget setups and other items.  This requires a re-tool every time you want to upgrade if you are using widgets in the home page.  Losing all customizations on upgrade if you have made a lot of changes is also just plain a PITA.  There should be a user CSS section or someplace where changes can be made to stay preserved.  What if I modify a lot to re-arrange layouts on a page I will have to re-do all that work.

All changes are noted in the "version.txt" file.

If you have customizations, then you'll probably benefit from comparing the files changed in "version.txt", with your customized files.

You can use a free text comparison tool such as "WinMerge". I use it and find it VERY useful.

So basically, you would then have to overwrite the newer files with the older customized files? Like the .css? Some of my client files have actual code changes in the other .php files as well – all those get lost in an upgrade? What is the sense in the upgrade if you replace them all with the old files to maintain your customization?

I wouldn't overwrite new files with old files, unless you've verified in "version.txt" that particular file has not changed.  Then it would be ok.

With .css changes, I'd recommend creating your own custom style — then you don't have to worry about any changes.

For info on that, read the file "how-to-add-or-modify-styles.txt" that's located in your "custom-styles" folder in your Market Theme files area.

As far as WHY to upgrade — it isn't always necessary.  Generally, the theme is working just fine in it's current state.  Once in awhile, the upgrade is to fix a bug, but generally — it's about new features being added.

If you don't need any new features, then there's usually not a need to upgrade.

Again, if you have to upgrade — refer to what I wrote in post #4 above.  It's a little extra work than clicking an upgrade link, but it's really not that bad.
